Bi-lingual and Bi-cultural

With roughly 12 million English and Spanish speakers in the U.S. today, it’s no surprise we are starting to see more of a need for Bilingual media promotions. Many Bilingual speakers are also Bicultural like me. What does this mean? It means we consume media in both languages and enjoy watching our respective shows and films in English or Spanish and in the rare occasion in both languages like Selena: The Series on Netflix. So a person who watches Estrella TV, Telemundo, or Univision, will also watch ABC, CBS, NBC, and all the streaming options.

Being Bi-cultural is a natural occurrence for those of us who were born in another country but have been raised here in the States. We can identify the cultural differences while also enjoying what both the Hispanic/Latino and American culture offers us. Whereas, someone else who may be Bi-lingual but they were not raised here. They may not have fully integrated into both cultures because they still primarily only engage in the Hispanic/Latino media world. This would be my mom.

She arrived in the U.S. when I did some 39 years ago and while she took ESL as an adult, she has never been fluent in English. She is not Bi-cultural either although she has lived here for many decades. If anyone were to hire my mom for a Bilingual Hispanic accented spot, even if she could say the words, she wouldn’t necessarily be able to deliver the nuisances of the script because she doesn’t fully understand both cultures. This would be very noticeable for any scripts that require comedic timing in commercials. To explain this even further, if we were to watch this Bilingual Spanish promo I voiced together, she would understand what the promo is about, she would have no clue who Tamron Hall is while my brother, son, and myself would. This is just one example of how multi-generation migrants live. ?

There is no right or wrong

This is not to say that there is anything wrong with being Bi-lingual and not Bi-cultural. It just is a matter of how each person and family adapts to being an immigrant. There are many people that fall within the spectrum of my mom and myself. The movie Spanglish is also a good example of seeing the spectrum of how people choose to adapt to the American culture.

Bilingual Media is Entering a New Era

With 2nd, 3rd, and now even 4th generation children being born here like my son, are and do consume both cultures. For them, this truly Bilingual and Bicultural Spanish promo feels normal and they are loving this Bilingual infusion crossover promo spots.

Women in Promo

As a Hispanic woman to be able to hear myself in a promo is a bit surreal. Especially because it’s for the Latino community. Both the American and Hispanic market tend to utilize men more than women. Thankfully, we are also starting to see a new era in Promo where women voices like mine and others are being used. It’s truly an honor to add my name to the list of women in Promo and not just English Promo but Spanish Promo too.
